7 DI terror group members surrender in Maguindanao del Norte

SEVEN members of the Dawlah Islamiya (DI) terror group have surrendered to authorities in Maguindanao del Norte, renouncing violence and armed struggle, the military said Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Lieutenant Colonel Aeron Gumabao, 57th Infantry Battalion (57IB) commander, said they voluntarily surrendered Tuesday, June 3, at their headquarters in Edwards Camp, Mirab village, Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.

Gumabao said the DI surrenderers have turned over two 60-millimeter mortars, two M-14 rifles, one M-79 Grenade Launcher, a caliber .30 sniper rifle and one 7.62-MM sniper rifle.

Gumabao presented the DI surrenderers to Brigadier General Michael Santos, 603rd Infantry Brigade commander, in a ceremony Tuesday, June 3, at the 57IB headquarters.

Maguindanao del Norte Governor Sharifudin Tucao Mastura witnessed the presentation of surrenderers.

During the ceremony, Santos emphasized the important role of the local government and the people behind the success of the surrender of the seven DI members.

“The successful surrender of the seven DI members would not have been possible without the tireless support and cooperation of local officials, community leaders, and the people themselves,” Santos said.

“Their cooperation, reporting of information, and participation in peace initiatives have been key to reaching out to those who have lost their way and encouraging them to return to normal life,” Santos added. (SunStar Zamboanga)
