Bangsamoro Leaders Urge Compassion in HIV Fight
MARAWI CITY — The Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta has joined regional efforts to address the rising number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm).
The Islamic advisory body has called on communities to approach the issue with compassion rather than judgment, emphasizing the importance of understanding HIV as a public health concern.
Speaking at a strategic planning session convened by the Ministry of Health-Barmm, Sheikh Mohammad Pangca underscored the importance of educating the public that HIV is a medical condition, not a moral or religious failing.
“We must educate our communities that HIV is a medical condition, not a sin,” he said, adding that Islamic teachings promote compassion and understanding.
The session brought together health professionals, policymakers, and Islamic scholars to coordinate strategies for HIV prevention, reduce stigma, and promote early testing and treatment across the region.
Data from the MOH showed that Barmm has recorded a total of 565 HIV cases in 2025. Of these, 176 are in Lanao del Sur and 83 in Marawi City.
The Marawi City Health Office (CHO) urged residents to prioritize HIV screening. It also advised pregnant women to undergo early testing for HIV and syphilis to help prevent mother-to-child transmission. According to the CHO, early detection can reduce transmission risks and support effective treatment of both infections. PIA-10
