Wasteland 3 and Project Zomboid have a rival in apocalypse RPG Survive the Fall

If you enjoy the tension of survival against all odds in the likes of Project Zomboid and Wasteland 3, new Steam game Survive the Fall is one you’ll want to inspect. With team strategy, base building, tactical combat, and plenty of mysteries to uncover, developer Angry Bulls’ creation feels like a fusion of State of Decay, Wasteland, XCOM, and even settlement management akin to the likes of Rimworld. It’s out now, and you can even grab it at a generous early discount if you’re quick.

The world of Survive the Fall is on the brink of total collapse in the wake of a devastating meteor strike. Many parts of the land are inflicted by a fallout called ‘stasis,’ and frequent swings in the climate have made life difficult. But conditions look to have stabilized somewhat, and that’s where we step into the survival game, setting out on a journey to explore and potentially begin to repopulate Earth.

For all its devastation, Survive the Fall is full of rather beautiful environments. But every corner, forest, and burnt-out building could hide your doom; humans, wildlife, and nature itself all threaten the life of any unwary explorer. Fortunately, you aren’t just one person, as you’re able to gather, equip, and upgrade a squad of adventurers. Make use of their specialties and cover each other’s backs in a team of up to three, or assign them to handle tasks back in your base while you venture further across the world.

Your settlement will be your haven, but building it won’t come easy. With more than 30 facilities available to be researched and constructed, from farms and shelters to kitchens and labs, you’ll need to carefully plan your use of resources. As the town grows, other survivors may be attracted to it, and their skills can help you continue to thrive – but only if you’re capable of ensuring you’ve met their needs and earned their respect.

Danger, of course, is everywhere, but how you approach it can vary wildly. Perhaps you’ll favor a stealthy approach, setting up ambushes and carefully disabling traps and security systems. Or maybe you prefer to go in guns blazing; just remember that, with ammo and medicine both in scarce supply, every step you can take to preserve your resources and the health of your companions will prove worth its weight in gold.

Survive the Fall - Base building in the apocalypse RPG.

“Survive the Fall started as a dream four years ago,” Angry Bulls writes. “We poured everything we had into this game – our time, our skills, our frustrations, our joy. And now that world we imagined is real.” It says the way you choose to play is up to you, whether you prefer to spend days exploring or return to camp to settle in safety each night. “Despite our team size, we’ve built something big – a game that, according to our testers and early community players, takes between 50 and 100 hours just to complete the storyline.”

Survive the Fall is out now on Steam, and you can get it at a 20% discount until Thursday June 5, meaning you’ll pay $19.99 / £16.79. Head here if you think you’ve got what it takes to outstay the wasteland.
