Local church offers blessings for animals and their owners in special service

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – A “Blessing of the Animals” was offered at the United Methodist Temple in Beckley.

These blessings were offered for any animals that owners wished to bring to be blessed.

Church officials requested that animals be presented on a leash or in a crate. Blessings over pictures were even issued for those who were unable to bring their pets.

Ellen File, a member at the United Methodist Temple explained what inspired her church to do this.

“It’s usually held on the birthday of Saint Francis of Assisi, who loved nature and animals. His birthday was October 4th. [It is either that day] or the Sunday closest to that,” said File.

Saint Francis of Assisi is a religious figure in the Christian faith who lived during the 12th and 13th centuries.

Mostly dogs were presented at this event, as well as one cat. File told 59News why it is important for them to ask for blessing over their animals.

“Animals are God’s creatures, just like humans. It was not our original idea, but we heard about it and started it and it is fun,” said File.

File said she hopes this event continues for years to come.
