Bago City DRRMC denies P50-B Kanlaon aid
THE Bago City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) clarified that there is no truth to the claim that P50-billion assistance was allotted for Bago City residents affected by the Kanlaon volcano eruption.
This was after some netizens posted on social media looking for the P50 billion calamity fund allegedly allotted for Bago City.
Dr. Merijene Ortizo, CDRRMC head, said in a statement that they are aware of the circulating false accusations and misinformation regarding the distribution of humanitarian assistance (ayuda) to those affected by the Kanlaon volcano eruption.
“We would like to categorically clarify that all relief operations are carried out in accordance with strict guidelines on transparency, equity and accountability,” Ortizo said.
She said masterlists of beneficiaries are validated in coordination with barangay officials and documents are verified by the CDRRMO and City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
“Our relief efforts are subject to accounting and auditing procedures. Also, the CDRRMC firmly corrects that there is no truth to the claim that P50 billion in assistance was allotted for Bago City residents affected by the Kanlaon Volcano eruption,” she added.
Just a day after the elections, the Kanlaon volcano in Negros Island erupted anew around 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, affecting two cities and a municipality in Negros Occidental.
Thin ashfall had been reported in the three areas of Negros Occidental, including La Carlota City, where Barangays Cubay, San Miguel, Yubo and Ara-al were affected.
It also affected the two barangays in Bago City — Barangays Ilijan and Binubuhan — and another three barangays in La Castellana, which include Barangays Biak-na-Bato, Sag-ang, and Mansalanao.
“We understand that in times of distress, emotions can run high. However, we urge the public to verify information before spreading unverified claims,” Ortizo said.
She said the circulation of false or misleading content can disrupt emergency operations and put lives at risk.
“Authorities are actively monitoring social media and other communication platforms to detect and address the spread of misinformation. Those found deliberately sharing false information may be held legally accountable,” she added.
Tuesday’s explosion was the fourth eruption of the volcano. The first was recorded in June 2024, December 2024, and followed by another in April 2025. (MAP)
