Garden Club of Richmond began their 2024-2025 year holding their meeting in the new high beamed ceiling and massive windowed visitor center of the sprawling George Ranch Historical Park facility. The hostesses, Judy Adamson, Cindy Bass, Ruthanne Mefford, Barbara Wade, Mike Greenwood, and Diana Kelley continued the ranch theme inside the center using checkered tablecloths, wood plates and utensils, and flower and lantern centerpieces. The lunch included delicious pimento cheese and chicken salad open faced sandwiches, crackers, pasta salad, and platters of fruits, nuts, and cookies.

Susan Farris, new president of the club, opened the September meeting thanking the hostesses for their efforts. She called on Ruthanne Mefford, a member of the club and a trustee of the George Foundation, to introduce Adrienne Barker who oversaw the construction of the visitor center. Ms. Barker informed the ladies that they will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of George Ranch and quipped with the ladies “We were here before Texas”. She encouraged the club to participate in the ranch’s efforts to help bring former garden club member Mamie Georgie’s beautiful garden back to her home. Volunteers are needed.

An impromptu visit by Roger Adamson, CEO of the George Ranch Foundation and son of club member Judy Adamson, pleasantly surprised the club as he welcomed and invited the ladies to take in the beautiful window views from all sides of the open concept center and also visit the gift shop, the other ranch facilities, and events.

Other topics discussed during the meeting were Anniversary Garden brick inventory and sign replacement, caladium bulb sales and an introduction of next year’s chairmen, the status of the civic project planter in Richmond, membership requirements, and this year’s field trip to Carmel and Monterey California.

The Garden Club of Richmond ‘s October program will be presented by Zach Lambert, owner of Mercy Goods in Richmond, Texas.
