70 more residents to avail themselves of free cataract

AT LEAST 70 additional residents of Lapu-Lapu City are set to receive free cataract surgeries following a city-wide eye screening held on Dec. 6, 2024.

City Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, in an interview with SunStar Cebu, said the initiative, which started in 2021, has restored the eyesight of hundreds of residents through free cataract surgeries.

From Jan. 2 to 5, 2025, at least 50 individuals successfully underwent cataract and pterygium surgeries under this program.

“The senior citizens were emotional and moved to tears, saying that without this free service, they wouldn’t be able to undergo surgery due to the high costs,” Cuizon said

in Cebuano.

She added that many patients expressed deep gratitude, knowing they could now see their grandchildren again.

The medical mission, facilitated by Cuizon’s office, was a collaborative effort with private and nongovernment organizations. Financial aid for the project came from Cuizon’s office. The surgeries for patients, aged 44 to 81, were conducted at the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital by a team of five doctors.

According to the World Health Organization, cataracts are a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness globally. Cataracts, often linked to aging, can also result from injuries, inflammation, or other conditions.

Cuizon emphasized that there is no age limit for availing of the free service. However, individuals must submit the required documents, including proof of indigency, residency and an updated Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth) membership. Those without Philhealth need to enroll either as indigent members or senior citizens.

Cuizon encouraged residents to check her Facebook page for updates on the next eye screening schedule.
